DEFINING RELEVANCE

Craft & Tips

Are you a museum or exhibit creator and trying to find ways increase engagement?

Of the many ways there are to increase engagement, the first is to decide if the experience you are creating is RELEVANT for your guest. Here are tenants to consider when beefing up the relevance factor of an experience. The best of experiences includes ways to braid multiple tenants, to have a large reach and be as impactful as possible.

Guest may find an experience relevant if it reflects:

1.   Cultural or community holiday/themes

2.   Current and trending topics or phenomena

3.   National, regional, or geographic relation

4.   Ideas consistent with community data or community-expressed needs (includes but not limited to guest surveys, needs assessments from community and affiliate organizations, state standards, prototyping and piloting data, community deliberations).

5.   Filling a gap: subject, activity, content related to culture, age, or identity of a group reflective of the population, but underrepresented in your impacted demographic; an unknown topic or an unconventional way of presenting/positioning an experience.

6.   Identity/culturally specific stories that are local and achievable. They give a sense of inspiration and pride.
